Sweet 16 Baby

Mar 29, 2011 -- 1:10pm

Well, it all starts back up again this Thursday.  You know what I'm talking about.  The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament and the Sweet Sixteen.  Thurdays games:  West Regional at The Honda Center down in Orange County - San Diego State vs.. Connecticut; Duke vs. Arizona.  Southest Regional in New Orleans: Florida vs. Brigham Young and the Butler vs. Wisconsin.  Then on Friday it heats up again with the East Regional in Newark, New Jersey: North Carolina vs. Marquette and then Ohio State vs. Kentucky.  The things continue with the Southwest Regional in San Antonio with Kansas vs. Richmond and then Virginia Commonwealth vs. Florida State.  I think it's going to be an exciting weekend of college basketball.  After all is said and done we'll all be looking forward to seeing who the Elite Eight will be this time around and finally the Final Four.  My bracket is all messed up starting the first weekend.  Right!  I didn't do a very good job this year with my picks.  I mean, Pitt let me down big-time and so did West Virginia and Louisville.  All from the Big East or as Charles Barkley calls them:  The Little East.  Wow, they really disappointed a lot of folks who thought they were going to really take names and do some "winning" damage in the tournament. Well, we'll just have to wait until next season and see how things turn out.  Hey, I'm still a University of Pittsburgh fan no matter what.  They did their best and as the Bible says, "This too shall pass."  Enjoy the rest of the tournament.

College BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK

Mar 11, 2011 -- 5:38pm

As I've predicted there is some very good basketball being played by a number of teams during this Conference Championship Week all over the country.  I started watching this morning, early out here in the West, because as you know we are three hours behind the East Coast.  Well, I started watching Miami verses North Carolina and what a battle it was.  At one point NC was down seventeen points and not looking like they were going to make it back to really make it a game.  If you were watching, then you know North Carolina came roaring back in the second half with a bunch of 3-pointers, which got them back into the game for sure.  Harrison Barnes was really hot from beyond the three point line for NC.  The game was tied and the Tarheels pulled it out with a last second shot just before the buzzer and walked away with a classic ACC Conference Tournament win.  It was a big one for North Carolina.  If this is any indication of what we have to look forward to next week.  The NCAA's are going to not only we exciting, it's going to be crazy!  There's nothing like a good exciting college game during March Madness.  Here's another one going right down to the wire. It's Alabama 62 and Georgia 59 with 31.0 seconds to go with an alabama player on the foul line and he make one and missed the second one.  So the score is 63 - 59 Alabama.  Alabama got another guy on the line and he makes the first shot and missed the second make the score 64 - 59 Alabama.  I know Charles Barkley's happy for his almamater.  With that, Alabama gets to move on in the SEC Tournament.  I just saw the score from the Ohio State vs Northwestern game from the Big Ten Conference and The Buckeyes won that one by a six point margin 67 -61.  Northwestern, not known for their powerful basketball teams over the years gave Oho State a little more competion than they were expecting.  That's the way it seems to be each year when all the tournaments get started.  I think the competion gets stiffer and the games certainly get more intense.  Oh, before I forget, look at Notre Dame, not one of my favorite teams to root for.  But, in the Big East Conference Tournament they seem to be a team to keep a close eye on the rest of the way and into the NCAA's next week.  I guess we'll see how this thing is going to play-out.  I'm currious to see what's going to happen in the Big East Simi-finals between U.Conn and Syracuse and then Notre Dame verses Louisville.  I believe both those games are later today.  Yep, I'm correct.  One game is at 7PM EST and the other contest starts at 9PM EST.   I expect more great basketball.
Just a quick comment about two NBA teams. Can you believe that the Miami Heat got the Lakers last night.  The "Big 3" and cast of others down there in South Beach decided they were going to show the world they could and can measure up with one of the top winning teams in the league.  Congrads to them for stopping their five game losing streak.  The Lakers I'm sure will take it all in stride and keep right on marching towards the play-offs as usual.  Hey, we all know they wanted that one bigtime!  It's almost bracket time folks for us college hoop fans.  Make sure you do your research before it's too late.  Blessings.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK - CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY:

Mar 10, 2011 -- 10:49pm

I'm am currently in shock people!  My Pittsburgh Panthers have just gone down in defeat to U. Conn with a last second shot from Walker to knock my guys out of the B
ig East Conference Tournament.  WOW!  I can't believe it.  I don't want to believe it.  Well, I just have to live with it, but they'll still get to do their thing in the NCAA Tournament and hopefully there they will get a chance to really do their thing and still make it to the Final Four.  Last night I watched two college games and a NBA game with my Clippers against the Boston Celtics and "The Clips" beat'em in Boston.  Way-to-go CLIPS!  Griffin and and the rest of the KIDS (rookies) with a little veterans help are starting to show a little something.  I can't wait for this season of the NBA to get over and we can get on to the Fall 2011 - 2012 season, which I think "The Clips" are going to be a lot of fun to watch.  I think they're going to surprise some folks next season as long as Blake stays healthy.  Oh, back to the college games I watched last night.  I actually enjoyed watchiing Northern Colorado verses Montana.  N. Colorado won the game and won the Big Sky Conference Championship for their first ever trip to the Big Dance, the NCAA Tournament.  Congrads to them.  I also watched Robert Morris University, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, they played Long Island University from New York and L.I. University won that one in a close game.  I enjoyed that one too.  Right now Stephan and I are watching St. John's and Syracuse with 26.8 seconds to go and the score is 75 to 70 Syracuse.  Syracuse now has a guy on the Free Throw Line and has pused the leas to 77 to 70 with 13.2 seconds to play.  I think Syracuse will win this one and move on to the next round of the Big East Conference Championship.  I am really looking forward to next week when it all really starts for REAL!  The NCAA's.  It's OK Pitt.  This loss will give you what you need to make you do much better next week in the NCAA Tournament.  Have faith guys!

Blessings,

MARCH MADNESS HERE WE COME

Mar 10, 2011 -- 10:48pm

Well, here we are folks!  It's time for March MADNESS at it's very best.  There is a lot to talk/write about when it comes to basketball in general.  For me, I want to take a little time to discuss College basketball at it's very best and the upcoming NCAA Tournament, which begins next week.  Here in Los Angeles we are getting ready for the exciting Pacific Life Pac-10 Basketball Tournament, which starts tomorrow, 9 March 2011 at the Staples Center.  Things kick off with Stanford playing Oregon State at 6PM PST and later tomorrow night it will be Oregon taking on Arizona State.  Thursday, 10 March 2011 there's four games starting with USC VS CAL (Berkley) followed by Arizona against the winner of Game 1; then UCLA against the winner of Game 2 and Washington taking on their state rival Washington State.  I can't wait to see Klay Thompson in action once again.  He's the younger son of former Laker Center, Mychael Thompson.  Yep, he won an NBA Championship bask in the day with folks like "Magic" Johnson, Kareem and Byron Scott, just to name a few of his team-mates at that time.  His other son, Mychael Jr. is a Senior playing at Pepperdine University here in Malibu.  Klay, he's the real baller in my opinion.  So, the question is: who's going to win the Pac 10 Tournament Championship?  We'll have to wait and see and I'll keep you up to date with the final results.  Hey, the Love family are basketball fans at every level.  I follow the Men's game and my son Stephan, he follows the men and the women's game.
Now, for the rest of the nation.  I really like a lot of the teams from the Big East because they have so many who have done well during the regular season team play.  Teams like, from my hometown, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Pitt Panthers.  They're ranked #3 in the Men's AP Top 25 Poll.  In the other poll, I forget the name right now, but they're ranked #4.  I'm expected great things from them in NCAA Tournament.  Plus, you have to take teams like Ohio State, Kansas, Notre Dame, Duke, orth Carolina, Syracuse, San Diego State, BYU, Purdue, Texas, Louisville, Wisconsin, Florida, Kentucky, Arizona, St. John's and Cincinnati seriously.  It should be a good tournament this year with some very close games right from the start.  I am ready Baby!  I'm hopeing one of our local teams can make a little noise this year.  For whatever reason I tend to cheer for UCLA because so many young Aftican-American players have come out of their program and made it to the NBA.  But because most of them tend to acquire their degrees either when they graduate or by taking classes in continuing education until they get that under graduate degrees.  I have to also admit that I'm rooting for them this year because Stephan's AAU Coach, Mr. Stover's kid Anthony Stover, a Freshman, is one of the Centers on the team who's been getting some minutes. Loyalty is important to me.  Getting back to some of the other teams I'm looking to make a little noise in the Big Dance are St. John's and keep an eye on West Virginia.  I'm really going to be pulling for Pitt and North Carolina.  I think they can do some damage maybe make it to the Final Four.  Obviously, we'll just have to wait and see with the Brackets come out.  Who do you think President Obama's going to go with this year?  His Bracket is usally pretty good.  He knows his basketball.  That's it for now and enjoy all the great basketball coming your way.  Be Blessed in the LORD!

Walt on Roethlisberger & PlayOffs!

Apr 21, 2010 -- 7:08pm

Before I get to NBA basketball. Let's look at the top sports story out there, which is about the possible six game suspension of my homtown Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback "Big" Ben Roethlisberger. The NFL Commissioner Roger Godell says it up to Ben what ultimately happens with this suspension of the first six games of the year. If he stays out of trouble and keeps his personal conduct up to proper standards. The Commissioner will possibly reduce the suspension to only four games. Personally, I think "Big" Ben will "WALK THE CHALK!". It's being reported that the Steelers Management has put it out there that if any team would like Ben and be willing to give up a first round pick and some other things. They MIGHT, opertive word here is MIGHT, consider trading Ben. Yea, right! They are not going to let him go anywhere but right there in "The Burgh." Trust me, Steeler fans would riot if the Rooney's even thought about letting Ben go. Let's be truthful about this. He is the heart of the team and they'll make do until he can play weather it's a six game suspension or a four game sit. The Steelers will be back on track right out of the box when the regular season is ready to kick-off in September 2010.

Now, on to the NBA and all the going ons during the current Playoffs. The L.A. Lakers just managed to get by the Thunder last night. Me and Stephan were cheering for Oklahoma to get 'em and really make a series out of this thing. They're on their way back home to Oklahoma City and we know their building is going to be rockin' as Kobe Bryant said in an interview las night. I think things are about to get interesting for the Lakers.. Boston put it on D. Wade and his bunch and are now up 2 - 0 on the Heat. As I predicted, the Phoenix Suns turned it around big-time against Portland, which we know was going to happen. Phoenix will win this Playoff Series. My man Grant Hill along with Steve Nash will carry this team to the next round at all cost. Watch what I tell you. It's a done deal! Tonight I'm really interested in seeing what happens between Dallas and San Antonio. I just can't seen the Spurs rolling over and dying during this series. Yes, these gentelmen are getting a little older, but that doesn't mean they can't still play the game at a very high level. Remember, "professional pride" also has alot to do with the outcome of these games throughout the league. Come on Spurs. Get it together and show the basketball sporting world you still are a force to be dealt with on the court! For you folks who haven't been paying attention. The Western Conference of the NBA, per the experts, is the toughest in the league. Keep an eye on the Lakers, Dallas and the Denver Nuggets in the West. The has some interesting match-ups also when it comes to Cleveland and the Orlando Magic. I still think Atlanta just might give some folks a little anxiety at this time of year. Think about some of this stuff I just mentioned and tell me what you're thinking and feeling. I'll pick it up later!

God's Blessings,

PLAYOFFS BABY!

Apr 21, 2010 -- 7:03pm

Well, here we go, the NBA Playoffs have certainly started with a bang. All the home teams won except Phoenix who lost to Portland and they shouldn't have. I certainly hope they (the Suns) will turn it around on Tuesday night. Anyway, all the top teams are off to a good start. Teams like the Lakers kinda got it going against the Okalahoma City Thunder. But the Thunder actually pushed them to the point of making the Lakers sweat just a bit. The Boston Celtics should have gotten beat by the Miami Heat because D. Wade and bunch had 'em and let 'em get away. I rally want to see Miami get 'em and get 'em good! Why do I feel like that. Because Rondo really has a big mouth and lacks a lot of class to have been so blessed in career thus far. And how about the Chicago Bulls! They're make the Cavs work for the victory. I know, the Cavs are going to win the series. But I don't think any of us thought the Bulls just might make the Cavaliers have to work a bit to secure this thing. Lebron hasn't slowed down a bit and will carry his gang on to the next series with energy to spair. Oh, what do you think about Denver and the Utah Jazz? The first one was a battle even with the Jazz short handed. I think Denver with ultimately win this series. But I do think the Jazz are going to make them work for it. When it comes to Dallas and San Antonio. I kinda thought the Spurs might get off to a good start. I was wrong. I still think the Spurs are gonna win a couple. Anyway, I hope so because I like a number of their players. I really didn't like the quote attributed to Coach "Pop". I hope he didn't say what I heard some Los Angeles Sportscaster claim he said. By now you're wondering what I heard...right? Well, this guy said "Pop" said he felt like some of his players played like dogs in the first game with Dallas. If he said it, I think that's a bit harsh. Yes I know, they're pros and they get paid alot of money. But that's no way to talk about your people to the press. Once again, if he said it. If he said something of that nature to them behind closed doors in the locker room. I wouldn't be surprised because some coaches say all kinds of demeaning things to their players and get away with it. Me and Stephan also got to check-out the Orlando Magic and the Charlotte Bobcats game. All-in-all the Magic should win this series but I must admit that all of the so-called "underdogs" are make their presents felt early on. Before I sign off lets not forget about the Atlanta Hawks against the Milwaukee Bucks. We've got a lot of basketball to go before this thing is over. So, before I wrap it up, I have to mention this. In todays Los Angeles Times Sports Section a sports writer by the name of Mike Bresnahan said in his headline that, "Bryant Looks Weary" and then went on to explain why he thinks this and gave some pretty impressive facts to back it up. I guess we'll all have to wait and see if Kobe can hold up and help his LA Lakers to back-to-back championships. As you already know, I'm not a bigtime Lakers fan. But I certainly am a bigtime basketbnall fan at every level. Like many others throughout this country and around the world I am very interested in seeing this years final outcome. That's for sure!

God's Blessings,

Walter
